How long does it take to get a business loan?
5 min read
The quick answer
It depends on the program, and most published numbers cover only one stage. SBA puts its own review at 2 to 10 business days for a 7(a) Small loan and 5 to 10 business days for a Standard 7(a). Non-bank term loans can fund in a few business days, per the Capital Selector term loan page.
What the published SBA window actually measures
SBA lists an SBA turnaround time for most 7(a) types. Read it carefully: it is SBA's review of the lender's package, not the span from your first conversation to money in the account. Before that clock starts, a lender takes the application, collects documents and underwrites the file. After it stops, the loan still has to close.
SBA also makes the division of labor explicit. You will always work directly with your lender and not with SBA, and for several programs SBA may grant lenders delegated authority to process, close, service and liquidate a loan without SBA review at all. So the lender, not the agency, usually sets the pace you feel.
Published windows, by program
A 7(a) Small loan, up to $350,000 and term loans only, carries an SBA turnaround time of 2 to 10 business days, with the credit decision made by SBA or by lenders granted delegated authority. A Standard 7(a), from $350,001 to $5 million, carries an SBA turnaround time of 5 to 10 business days. SBA Express, up to $500,000, lists no SBA turnaround time at all: the credit decision is made by the lender, in exchange for a maximum SBA guarantee of 50%. International Trade, up to $5 million, carries an SBA turnaround time of 5 to 10 business days.
A non-bank term loan is sized to your profile and use of funds and can fund in a few business days, where bank and SBA-backed loans take weeks because of their deeper review. A revenue-based advance is sized to your receivables and can fund in days; it is the purchase of a portion of future receivables rather than a loan, and its cost is a factor rate rather than an APR.
The SBA figures come from SBA's own types-of-7(a)-loans page. The last two come from the Capital Selector term loan page, home page and disclosures.
The part of the calendar you control
The term loan page puts the real variable plainly: it depends on the program and how ready your documents are. That is the half of the timeline nobody else can move for you.
Capital Selector weights documentation at 15 percent of its readiness score, the same weight it gives time in business, behind only monthly revenue and owner credit at 18 percent each. You cannot add two years of operating history this month. You can have clean, current statements and returns ready to read by Friday. Every SBA 7(a) loan also requires SBA Form 1919 from the borrower, whatever the program, so that one is predictable.
A file that arrives complete gets underwritten once. A file that arrives in pieces gets underwritten three times, and the weeks you lose are not in anyone's published window.
Decide early whether the need is urgent or important
Capital Selector states the trade on its home page: fast money and cheap money are rarely the same money. An advance can fund in days, but its factor rate and frequent remittance pull hard on cash flow. A term loan or a line usually costs far less and fits a longer horizon, and it asks for more up front.
Name your deadline before you start shopping, because it decides which column you should be reading. Equipment on sale this week and a build-out planned for next quarter are different problems, and the term loan page treats them differently.
Capital Selector is a financing marketplace, not a lender, and does not make credit decisions. Being matched is not an approval. It means your profile aligns with programs offered by lenders in the network. Amounts, rates, terms and timing are determined solely by the lender after its own review, per the disclosures. This guide is general information about how these programs work, not a recommendation for your business.
Questions
Does the SBA decide how fast my loan moves? Usually not. SBA says you work directly with your lender, and lenders may be granted delegated authority to process and close a loan without SBA review. For SBA Express, the credit decision is made by the lender.
Which SBA program has the shortest published review? Of the types that list one, 7(a) Small at 2 to 10 business days, for loans of $350,000 or less. SBA Express lists no SBA review window because the lender decides.
What should I have ready before I start? Current business bank statements, recent business tax returns, and a specific number tied to a specific use of funds. Documentation carries 15 percent of the readiness weighting, and it is the fastest of the seven factors to improve.
Will checking my options slow anything down or affect my credit? No. The readiness tool and the advisor do not involve a credit pull. A soft check may run when you ask to see real offers, and a lender runs a full review only if you move forward and give permission, per the disclosures.
